San Beda Red Cubs, Xavier School Stallions ease into PSSBC quarterfinals

NCAA champion San Beda College and Xavier School scored impressive wins on Sunday to ease into the quarterfinals of the 4th Philippine Secondary Schools Basketball Championships Jumbo Plastic Linoleum Cup at the San Beda Gym in Manila.

The Red Cubs, winners of a record seven straight NCAA titles, clobbered the University of Santo Tomas Tiger Cubs, 89-72, to complete a two-game sweep of Group D eliminations.

It was a huge follow up to the red Cubs’ 88-74 win over former champion Hope Christian High School on Saturday.

The Xavier Stallions beat the Far Eastern University Baby Tamaraws, 74-64, to make it two for two after a thrilling 84-81 win over the Arellano University Braves, the NCAA runners up,

La Salle-Zobel made a rousing debut as it whipped Manila Patriotic School, 105-55, with Aljun Melecio, Nathan Cosejo and Miguel Fortuna scoring in double figures.

Meantime, Mapua welcomed the return of NCAA MVP Mike Enriquez with an 84-79 win over Adamson to stay in quarterfinal contention in the tournament sponsored by Dickies Underwear, Freego, Ironcon Builders, MEC Networks, Hapee Toothpaste, Blackwater Sports and Rain or Shine with Molten as official ball.

Without Enriquez, the Mapua Red Robins were punished by the Chiang Kai Shek College Blue Dragons, 77-56, on Saturday.
