NCAA titlist San Beda rode on the hot shooting of Chami Diputado to pull off a come-from-behind 76-74 win over Hope Christian High School, while reigning UAAP champion National University bounced back from a stinging defeat to stay in contention in the 3rd Philippine Secondary Schools Basketball Championship Ironcon Builders Cup on Sunday at the Chiang Kai Shek College gym.
Diputado had 29 points on 9-of-18 shooting and dished out six assists to lead the Red Cubs to their second straight win in Group D and into the crossover quarterfinals slated on Saturday.
Also making it to the next round of the tournament were Jose Rizal University and Far Eastern University in Group B and Mapua and Xavier in Group C.
The Light Bombers handed St. Stephen's High School its second straight loss, 100-34. The Red Robins won 67-58, as University of the East Junior Warriors suffered back-to-back defeats.
Diputado made five triples, the last coming in the final 10.7 seconds that turned out to be the game-winning basket.
"We really had a hard time because of Jolo Go's shooting. Luckily, the team remained focused and Chami made that important shot," said SBC coach JV Sison.
The sweet-shooting Go recorded a tournament-high 31 points but his efforts went down the drain as Hope Christian failed to check Diputado.
The NU Bullpups exploded for 28 points in the third period on the way to scoring a 78-68 win over the defending champion San Sebastian to remain in contention for a quarterfinal berth in Group A.
The Bullpups suffered a heartbreaking 73-71 double overtime loss to Chiang Kai Shek College in the opener of the event sponsored by Dickies Underwear, MEC Computers, Jumbo Plastic Linoleum, Hapee Toothpaste, Freego, Ever Bilena-Blackwater and Rain or Shine
Mark Dyke produced a double-double of 17 points and 10 boards, scoring six in the third quarter to help the Bulldogs put up an 11-point spread, 59-48.
