Cebu-Khalifa pulled off a gripping 80-76 overtime win over reigning PSL NCR Regional champion Caloocan-Batang Kankaloo on Monday to stay alive in the hunt for a semis berth in the National Finals at the Victoria Sports Center in Quezon City.
John Noynay hit the go-ahead three-point shot while Peter Peteros secured Cebu-Khalifa’s victory by sinking three of his last free throws as the team from the Queen City of the South put Caloocan on the brink of elimination.
Although the team is not yet eliminated, Caloocan’s chances will depend now on the other teams, which are all scrambling for a win.
Peteros finished with 21 points to lead the charge for the Cebuanos, while Noynay fell a rebound short of a double-double performance as he wound up with 13 points and nine boards.
Also a key contributor for Cebu’s win was Vince Manqu, who ended up with 15 points and nine boards.
Earlier, Mark Leonard Solonia and Yzah Myl Dugaduga combined for 49 points to lead Cebu-Mancor past Manila-UST, 83-79 in overtime, and dealt the Tiger Cubs their second loss in as many games in the PSL born 2004 division.
Solonia capped his big game with a double-double as he also grabbed 11 rebounds.
Despite being beaten in the paint (24-46) and fastbreak points (4-25), Cebu survived the match through its steady three-point shooting.
Overall, the Cebuanos knocked in 13 three-point shots and hit 40% from beyond the arc while Manila hit only four of its 20 shots.
