COLLEGE of St. Benilde got going in the fourth period in running away with a 64-49 win over Mapua in their Filoil Flying V Preseason Premier Cup opener on Wednesday.
Gerard Castor led Benilde's balanced attack with nine points to go with five rebounds, two assists, and two steals, while Kendrix Belgica had eight.
Edward Dixon, Yankie Haruna, and Rene Sta. Maria had seven points each.
The Blazers opened the final quarter with a 12-4 run before establishing a 57-47 lead on Yankie Haruna's split from the charity stripe with 3:49 left.
The Taft-based squad limited the Cardinals, who are now playing without top scorer Allwell Oraeme, to just a field goal after that to secure its winning debut in the Premier Cup.
"It's been just a change of environment from day one. We're trying to put emphasis on defense and intensity," said new Benilde coach TY Tang.
Christian Bunag had 12 points for Mapua, which was also without Darella Menina who was reported to be on the way out.
Almel Orquina added eight points.
