The Philippine beach basketball women’s team split their matches Sunday to close in on a semifinal berth in the Asian Beach Games in Haiyang, China.
The Pinay cagebelles composed of 2011 Southeast Asian Games women’s basketball silver medalists Analyn Almazan, Ewon Arayi, Melissa Jacob and Allana Lim thrashed Nepal, 20-1, in the opening match of the Group A preliminaries of the three-on-three event.
The team, however, lost to pacesetting India, 14-9, in its second match and slipped to a tie for second with Thailand in the four-team Group A. The Filipinas can still advance to the crossover semifinals if they win on Monday.
Possible opponents in the semifinals in Group B include powerhouse China, Turkmenistan, Mongolia and Maldives.
Meanwhile, the women’s beach handball team was not as fortunate, losing to Thailand, 0-2.
The squad, made up of national cagers and fencers, is winless in two outings.
