Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas Executive Director Renauld ‘Sonny’ Barrios confirmed via SMS message to Spin.ph that the country will host the event from July 19 to 20.
SBP accepted from basketball’s world governing body Fiba the offer to become the host of the club competition, one of five legs across the world that stake berths to the World Tour Final.
Twelve teams are expected to join in the Asia Pacific meet.
SBP president Manny V. Pangilinan first bared Fiba’s offer during his speech in the Philippine Sportswriters Association Awards Night early this year.
Fiba made the proposal after the Philippines successfully staged the Fiba-Asia Championship last August, with thousands watching the action at Mall of Asia Arena where Gilas Pilipinas finished second behind Iran and gained a berth in this year’s Fiba World Cup.
The 3-on-3 is one of the fastest growing basketball events in the world and is already calendared in the Youth Olympic Games.
Recently, the Philippine team of Arvin Tolentino, Thirdy Ravena, Kobe Paras, and Prince Rivero topped the first staging of the Fiba-Asia Under-18 3x3 Championships to book a seat in the world championships in Jakarta last year.
