THE Philippine Under-18 basketball team will compete in the Filoil Flying V Hanes Premier Cup in preparation for the Fiba-Asia Under-18 Championship in Doha later this year.
The U18 squad is bracketed in Group B with reigning NCAA champion San Beda, Letran, Far Eastern University, Lyceum, Mapua, and St. Clare College.
Thirdy Ravena of Ateneo, Andrei Caracut of San Beda, Dave Yu of Sacred Heart School, Aaron Black of Ateneo, and Richard Escoto of Far Eastern University head the team, mentored by Jamike Jarin, that is training for the 16-team Fiba-Asia Under-18 Championship set August 19 to 28.
Youth team assistant coach Ricky Reyes said the Filoil tournament is a perfect gauge for the Under-18 squad in how ready they are against the best players in Asia in their age bracket.
“What coach Jamike wants to see is their intensity level and how they will rise up against the challenge of playing against teams loaded with championship experience and veteran leadership,” said Reyes.
After the Under-18 squad faces Far Eastern University on April 28, the national youth squad takes a break from the Filoil tilt as they play in the Seaba Under-18 Championship starting on May 3.
Also in the roster are Paul Desiderio of University of Visayas and University of the Philippines, Dawn Ochea of Sacred Heart School-Cebu and Adamson, and John Apacible of Hope Christian High School and Ateneo, and Jollo Go of Hope Christian High School.
