IT’S official: The women’s basketball team will compete in the 2013 Southeast Asian Games.
The Philippine Olympic Committee-Philippine Sports Commission Task Force has formally included the Discovery Perlas Pilipinas squad after a meeting on Monday that included PSC chairman Ritchie Garcia and POC chairman Tom Carrasco.
The PSC chief was out of the country for an official business last week, delaying the decision by the Task Force on the fate of the team.
“Women’s team is in,” chief of mission Jeff Tamayo said in a short reply to Spin.ph about the status of the team.
Questions were raised regarding the participation the women’s in the SEA Games after an inconsistent showing in the Fiba-Asia Women’s Championship.
Apparently, however, the team’s performance in the recent Fiba-Asia Women’s Championship was enough as they beat host Thailand in one of the preliminary matches in Level II competition.
Perlas Pilipinas, however, bowed to Southeast Asian neighbors Malaysia and Indonesia the following games.
Perlas Pilipinas will try to improve on its silver medal finish in Jakarta two years ago.
