PHILIPPINE Navy defeated Philippine Army, 64-60, over the weekend to rule the Pinay Ballers League Elite Division preseason women’s basketball tournament at the Philippine Navy Gym.
League MVP Chovi Borja had 13 points, six rebounds, and three steals, while Bernadette Mercado added nine points, six rebounds, and three steals as the former national team players led Navy to a 2-1 win in the best-of-three series.
Marites Gadian had 21 points to lead Army in Game Three of the tournament supported by Ever Bilena, Blackwater, SM, Army Shirt, K-Tech, and Great Awesome Uniforms.
Navy won Game One, 77-71, but Army prevented a sweep following a 54-52 win in Game Two of the tournament organized by Ewon Arayi and aimed at developing women’s basketball in the country.
Borja, Mercado, Gadian, Claire Castro of Far Eastern University, and Kat Garcia of the Philippine Army were named to the Mythical Five. Garcia also claimed the Best Defensive Player honor.
