PCCL hoping to go international with five-nation collegiate champions league

ORGANIZERS of the Philippine Collegiate Champions League are planning to stage an international tournament pitting its own titleholder against top college teams from other countries.

PCCL officials said they have received encouraging feedback from leagues in other Asian countries, and believe a five-nation tournament should be a good start.

“Our dream is to have the national collegiate champion meet the champions from other countries, that’s our next step,” said PCCL chairman Rey Gamboa, who hopes to get the ball rolling this year, meaning the winner of this year’s PCCL could go on and represent the country in the international meet.

Taiwan, Korea and Japan are among the first nations the PCCL hopes to lure in what they see as a “Jones Cup for collegiate teams.”

“We’ll try to organize parang Jones Cup for collegiate teams. We want a tournament like that for collegiate teams and we’re planning to invite teams from Japan, Taiwan and Korea to play,” he added.

Gamboa says the PCCL already has the blessing of the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas, although he admits scheduling will be a bit of a challenge.

“We have replies from five countries so we’re trying to see how we can align. The basketball program in the Philippines is naka-set na so we’re trying to see how we can move forward,” Gamboa said.

“Initially, we’re thinking of no more than five teams, including the Philippines. Hopefully that would be more manageable, from there we’ll let it go,” he added. “The hosting will revolve not just in the Philippines. After the first year, we’ll give to others so that the collegiate teams will be exposed.”

“We’re hoping that we will have our inaugural season by 2018, that’s our target. Ang feeling naman once we get this started, it will gather,” Gamboa continued.

“Mahirap pag umpisa eh, pero pag naumpisahan na yan, then the ball will start rolling. That’s how the Jones Cup started.”
