    Aug 22, 2018

WHEELS are turning as the Chooks-to-Go 3x3 Pilipinas nationwide tryouts have begun last week in Gapan, Nueva Ecija.

Basketball players of all ages welcomed the caravan as Kobe Paras and Chooks-to-Go scour the country for the next three members of the national 3-on-3 team which will vie for a spot in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.

“It’s heartwarming kasi nakikita mo na yung mga tao dito, gustong gusto talagang mag-participate dito sa Chooks-to-Go 3x3 pool,” said the UP forward who will be the mainstay of the national 3x3 team.

“Masaya ako kasi ang dami kong nakitang players na may potential and nakikita mo yung passion ng mga bata.”

Chance is brought to the grassroots level as Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP) eyes to discover “diamonds in the rough” in this nationwide 3x3 tour.

“Kung walang available players sa professional level or schools and collegiate level, why not bring 3x3 basketball to the grassroots? Kasi ang goal natin is to find a diamond in the rough and I’m pretty sure pag inikot natin yung 16 regions, we will find those players na di lang nabigyan ng opportunity to study in Manila and to play in big leagues,” said SBP 3x3 director Mark Solano.

The top four players from each city will be included in the national 3x3 training pool, where the SBP will find the best three players to join Paras in the Philippine 3x3 team.

For the SBP, it’s the perfect way of finding new talents which could excel in the halfcourt game as it brings the game of basketball to its purest form in the streets.

“Most of our players in the professional level and top collegiate leagues in Manila came from the grassroots. Yung vision ni (Chooks-to-Go president) Mr. Ronald Mascarinas to bring back basketball to where it started, sa grassroots level, ito na yun,” said Solano.

More importantly, it’s also a chance for the Philippines to show that it’s not only the most rabid basketball fanbase in the world, but also home to some of the world’s best players.

“Ito na yung chance natin to show na hindi lang sa 5-on-5 but sa 3x3 din, pwede tayong mag-excel,” said Paras.
