PHENOM Basilan finally broke through in the Chooks-to-Go Pilipinas 3x3 Patriot's Cup, presented by Coca-Cola, trumping Wilkins Balanga, 21-16, in the Finals to rule the third leg Saturday at SM City Muntinlupa.
Franky Johnson took matters to his own hands, knocking down the game-winning deuce with 1:36 to spare as the Steel were bridesmaids no more.
"We deserve this," said the Fil-Am Johnson, who unleashed nine points in the finale. "We did this for the whole province of Basilan. That's our goal, to redefine Basilan."
Marcus Hammonds added seven points, while Troy Rike chipped in four.
It was a sensational leg for Phenom Basilan, which turned back VetHealth Delhi 3BL in the semis with a 22-20 thriller behind the sweet shooting of Rike in the clutch.
The victory also allowed the Steel to seize the top spot of the leaderboard with 260 points, as well as bagging the P100,000 cash prize.
Debuting Travis Franklin carried Wilkins Balanga with six points, while Alvin Pasoal had five in the squad's first Finals appearance in the Patriot's Cup.
The Balanga crew got to the championship after surviving Max4-Birada Cebu, 21-18 in the semis.
In the side events, Gold's Gym Muntinlupa's David Carlos ruled the Dunk Contest, while Delhi's Kiran Shastri bagged his third straight Three-Point Shootout title.
Leg Four of the Patriot's Cup is slated on Saturday at SM Megamall Events Center.
