    THE PHILIPPINES drubbed Saudi Arabia, 95-52, on Friday night to open its campaign in the Fiba-Asia U18 Championships in Ulaan Baatar, Mongolia on a high note.

    A 17-2 flurry to end the first quarter practically sealed the win for the Energen-backed squad of coach Olsen Racela after the Saudis held the lead briefly at 10-6.

    The Philippines are favored to get a second win when it faces Kazakhstan on Saturday, 12 noon. The Kazakhs were walloped by powerhouse Iran, 105-46, on Friday.

    Kyle Suarez finished with 15 points while J-Jay Alejandro added 14 points for the Nationals. Mario Bonleon and Jerie Pingoy contributed 13 and 11 points each for the Philippine team and started the key first-quarter run.

    Bonleon buried a three while Pingoy and Suarez scored a basket to give the Nationals a lead they never relinguished.

    SAUDI ARABIA (52) — Faqihi 19, Jalas 11, Barafat 8, Ahmedkalil 4, Alhowase 4, Barnawi 4, Bakhashwain 2, Sufyani 0, Mussalam 0, Altamar 0, Muhammad 0.

    Quarterscores: 23-12, 49-29, 76-45, 95-52.
