PERLAS Pilipinas’ campaign in the Fiba-Asia Women’s Championships came to a bitter end when it lost to Indonesia, 60-54, on Thursday in Bangkok to miss out on a chance at a promotion to Level I.

After three straight victories including a one over reigning Southeast Asian Games champion Thailand, the Philippine women’s team suffered two straight losses — the other one against Malaysia on Wednesday — to ends its campaign in the Level II competition in disappointment.

Not even loss by Thailand against winless Hong Kong on Thursday night that will force a three-way tie for the second and final slot in the playoff against the lower two teams in Level I will save Discovery Pilipinas’ campaign in the tournament.

The result could affect the women’s team’s place in the SEA Games as the Philippine Olympic Committee-Philippine Sports Commission Task Force had demanded that the team justify its trip to the biennial meet by performing well in the Fiba-Asia tilt.

The Philiippines couldn’t survive a 11-2 run by the Indonesians bridging the second and third periods that have them a 49-33 lead.

Melissa Jacob hit a three-pointer to cut the deficit to three points, 52-55, with 45 seconds to play but the Indonesians made their free throws down the stretch to keep the Filipinas at bay.

Indonesia hit 21 of its 27 free throws while the Philippines shot a miserable 12-of-25 from the stripe.

Joan Grajales had 12 points, while Jacob and Ewon Arayi each had 11 points for the Philippine squad.

    The scores:

    Indonesia (60) – Anggraeni 15, Christaline 14, Ibo 12, Ayuningrum 9, Fasya 6, Rahmawati 3, Adhipuspitasari 1, Achmad 0, Tsarine 0, Radhmani 0.

    Philippines (54) – Grajales 12, Arayi 11, Jacob 11, Borja 5, Almazan 5, Tiu 5, Tioseco 3, Mercado 2, Galicia 0, Bernardo 0, Resultay 0.

    Quarterscores: 21-15; 41-33; 51-41; 60-54.
