    PH basketball gets own anime series with premiere of 'Barangay 143'

    PHILIPPINE basketball takes a different form with the premiere of the first ever sports-themed anime on local television.

    ‘Barangay 143’ goes on air over GMA-7 on October 21 at 10 a.m. as it tackles family, friendship, love, hardships and the sport closest to the Filipinos’ heart, basketball, set in the streets of Tondo, Manila.

    The series is inspired by the highly-popular Japanese manga series ‘Slamdunk’ that introduced Hanamichi Sakuragi to Filipino basketball fans.

    PBA great Benjie Paras and Phoenix big man Doug Kramer lend their voice to the local series that also features the voices of Alice Dixson, Teresa Loyzaga, Raver Eda, Pen Medina, Archie Alemania, Ping Medina, Jerald Napoles, Roadfil Macasero, Kimpoy Feliciano, Kramer’s wife Cheska, and their children Kendra and Scarlet.

    The cast is led by Kapuso stars Julie Anne San Jose, Migo Adecer, Ruru Madrid, and Kelley Day along with veteran actors John Arcilla, Edu Manzano, Lorna Tolentino and Cherie Gil.

    ‘Barangay 143’ follows the story of Bren Park (Adecer), a rising basketball star in Korea, who turns his back on everything after a major event changed his life. The search for answers leads Bren to Manila where he goes to live with his former nanny Tita Baby (Tolentino), in the gritty neighborhood of Barangay 143.

    It is here that Bren finds a whole new family who teaches him how to live and love once again.

    Coach B (Arcilla), the coach of Barangay 143’s Puzakals basketball team, is quick to spot Bren’s talent and is determined to bring him back to basketball, while Vicky (San Jose), the team manager and the coach’s daughter, and Wax (Madrid), the star player of a rival basketball team, are not quite in favor.

    Meanwhile, Bren’s strings from Korea are still attached to him and his former girlfriend, Jinri (Day), hopes to rekindle their relationship once again.

    Barangay 143 is a co-production of Synergy88 Entertainment Media Inc. (Philippines) together with August Media Holdings (Singapore), TV Asahi (Japan) and ASI Animation Studio.
