VON Pessumal took charge in the fourth quarter and led Ateneo to an 80-67 rout of Emilio Aguinaldo College for its third straight win in the FilOil Flying V Pre-Season Premier Cup at The Arena in San Juan on Friday.

Pessumal unloaded 11 of his 16 points during a crucial stretch in the pivotal fourth quarter, highlighted by back-to-back three-pointers.

His offensive explosion allowed the five-time reigning UAAP champions to pull away from a tight 51-50 contest on the way to a 65-53 lead with five minutes left in the game.

In all, the Eagles outscored the Generals, 12-3, over a three-minute stretch as they remained on top of Group B.

“This is the first summer game that we won by double digit. It's a tough win for us but we'll take it," said Ateneo star player Kiefer Ravena.

Trailing 41-47 late in the third, the Generals went on  a 7-2 run to trim the gap to 48-49 only to collapse in the midst of huge Ateneo run in the fourth.

The loss was the first for Emilio Aguinaldo.

“It's our mentality to win every time, that's why we win close games in the end. We know that we are far from the team that can compete neck-and-neck,” admitted Ateneo coach Bo Perasol.

"But we'll take it (win) anytime. It's a good morale booster for us."

Ravena came up with 18 points for Ateneo, while Juami Tiongson added 15.

The Blue Eagles won the battle off the boards, 50-38, and had more assists, 21-7.
