EVEN with Bo Perasol now the official head coach of Ateneo, Gabby Severino will continue to call the shots for the Blue Eagles in Game Three of the Philippine Collegiate Champions League finals against University of Santo Tomas.
Perasol's three-year deal as Ateneo coach took effect last December 1, but he prefers to step aside and let interim coach Severino finish what he started in the do-or-die match-up against the Tigers on Friday at the Ynares Sports Arena in Pasig City.
Severino had taken over the team’s coaching duties ever since Norman Black moved to Talk ‘N Text in the PBA after leading Ateneo to its fifth consecutive UAAP championship.
“Gabby Severino will finish the series,” said Perasol, who had sat on the bench of Ateneo in last week’s Game Two of the series. “I will be there to help him out. I believe he is doing a great job.”
The Tigers captured Game One of the championship series, 82-76, but the Blue Eagles came storming back, taking advantage of a defensive blunder by UST to take Game Two, 70-69.
Perasol said that the transition process for Ateneo as he takes over the coaching reins has been going well so far.
“Like any other process, it needs a lot of attention to details but I would like to believe that I’m coming along just fine. I have started to know the players better in a personal way as well as my coaching staff,” said Perasol.
Ateneo is eyeing its fourth PCCL title while UST is going for its first.
