BARANGAY Ginebra is on a roll, winning four straight games to recover from a 1-5 start and zero in on a place in the quarterfinals of the PBA Commissioner’s Cup. But at 5-5 (win-loss), Ginebra is not out of the woods yet.
Yes, there's still a chance Ginebra can miss out on the playoffs.
Ginebra has one game left in the elimination round against GlobalPort on July 6. Phoenix and Alaska also face off in that double-header at the Astrodome in Pasay City. Needless to say, the Kings must win against the Batang Pier to avoid any complications.
Here are the standings from 5th to 10th spots:
San Miguel 5-4
GlobalPort 5-5
Barangay Ginebra 5-5
Magnolia 4-5
Phoenix 4-6
Columbian 4-7
Based on computations made by SPIN.ph, a loss could pull Ginebra down to a tie with Phoenix for the eighth and final spot in the playoffs with a 5-6 win-loss card, necessisating a playoff.
How can that happen? Here is one way:
- San Miguel beats Blackwater, and Magnolia beats NLEX on July 4.
- Phoenix beats Alaska, and Barangay Ginebra loses to GlobalPort on July 6
- Magnolia beats San Miguel on July 7.
Based on that result, the team standings will end up like this:
Tie for 5th place: San Miguel 6-5
GlobalPort 6-5
Magnolia 6-5
Tie for 8th place: Barangay Ginebra 5-6
Phoenix 5-6
As seen from the elimination round, Phoenix can be a dangerous opponent for Ginebra, which lost to the Fuel Masters in overtime, 103-98, last May 20 at the Smart-Araneta Coliseum.
Incidentally, these two teams also figured in a trade recently with Phoenix sending Jeff Chan to Barangay Ginebra for the Kings’ 2019 first-round draft pick.
So the plan is so simple for Ginebra: Beat GlobalPort.
As for Phoenix, the Fuel Masters must win against Alaska to get a playoff shot at a place in the quarterfinals.
