Guiao not reading too much into NLEX rout of Phoenix in Ravena's first game back

NLEX coach Yeng Guiao said its lopsided win over Phoenix Pulse in a tune-up game on Wednesday should not serve as a barometer for the Road Warriors' readiness for the coming PBA Governors’ Cup.

The Road Warriors outclassed the Fuel Masters, 114-77, as Olu Ashaolu topscored with 23 points and Kiefer Ravena added 14 in his first tune-up game with NLEX since his return from an 18-month doping ban.

While he doesn't consider the victory a good gauge of where the team is in its buildup for the season-ending conference, Guiao was nonetheless happy with what he saw, more so since the win was achieved without injured players Poy Erram and JR Quinahan.

“I don’t take it as an accurate barometer. But it’s a good sign para sa amin,” said Guiao. “Olu played well. Wala si Poy and JR. Sa kanila, wala si (Jason) Perkins, wala si Matthew (Wright). But nonetheless, it was good.”

Ravena also looked good in only his second game since his reinstatment. He also suited up for Gilas Pilipinas in a tuneup against Adelaide 36ers on Sunday.

“I saw Kiefer in action with NLEX. I saw his chemistry with the rest of the team. I also saw how he can take over a game if he wants to. Those are good signs for the coming conference,” said Guiao.

Guiao also said it also isn't fair to judge Phoenix by this game.

“Actually, I didn’t play Kiefer too long. Mga 15 minutes lang the whole game. Pleasantly surprised. Phoenix is a strong team but I didn’t expect to win by 37 points. Parang nakakatawa nga. But sometimes, that happens,” said Guiao.

“It’s not an accurate measurement of how weak they are and how strong we are. Just so happened that everything was clicking on our part and they were having problems with their shots and they were not making their shots,” Guiao said.
