Yeng Guiao spared of fine, thankful late arrival didn't cost Rain or Shine a win

PLAYERS getting fined or sanctioned when coming in late for games is customary.

But what if it’s a coach? Like in the case of Yeng Guiao on Saturday when he arrived for Game Two of the PBA Philippine Cup semifinal game between Rain or Shine and Alaska already halfway through.

Teased about the matter by, Guiao chuckled and said, “Sa ngayon, hindi ko pa alam.”

Owing to the holiday rush, the Elasto Painters coach was caught in a heavy traffic from Pampanga, where he serves as congressman of the province’s first district, to the Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City and arrived late for the scheduled 5 p.m. game.

“I usually allot three hours for my travel time dahil may allowance ng kasama 'yun. Kaya umalis ako ng Pampanga, ala una. Pero dumating ako (sa game), ala sais na,” said Guiao.

By the time he joined the team in the dugout at the break, the Elasto Painters were already comfortably ahead, 55-36, a cushion enough for Rain or Shine to withstand a fourth-quarter Alaska rally and eke out a 102-95 win that leveled the best-of-seven series at one-game apiece.

Guiao, who allowed deputy coach Caloy Garcia to call the shots for the team even in his presence, said the win hopefully would somehow soften any management sanction on him – if there’s any that’s forthcoming.

“Nanalo naman kaya hindi ko alam kung paparusahan ako,” he said smiling.

This is not the first time that Guiao came in late for a Rain or Shine game as there were also instances in the past when gridlocks also kept him from calling the shots for the team on time.

But just like the case of Game Two, the Elasto Painters always found a way to win even if their temperamental coach came in late.

“Sa previous, wala pa naman kasi nananalo rin, e,” a laughing Guiao said.

But it would be a different case once the team loses and he checked in behind schedule.

“Ang mahirap niyan pag late ka, tapos talo ka,” he stressed. “Baka trabaho mo ang mawala.”
