NLEX coach Yeng Guiao hinted on major changes in the Road Warriors' guard lineup after a one-point defeat at the hands of Phoenix Pulse on Friday.
Guiao said he had ben expecting the other guards to step up, with Kiefer Ravena out for over half a year and Kevin Alas battling injuries, but has so far been unimpressed.
“To me, it’s no longer a question of adjustment dahil matagal na wala si Kevin at si Kiefer (Ravena),” said Guiao. “We are just going to have to draw ‘yung the best out of our guards that we have right now, or look for guards who can handle ‘yung ganung situations outside the team. Ganun lang ‘yun.”
“Kailangan namin dahil hindi consistent ‘yung performance ng mga guards. Maayos pa ‘yung linaro ni Kyles Lao kesa sa mga dati na,” said Guiao, referring to the rookie's eight-point, six-assist PBA debut.
One of the reasons for Guiao’s frustration was the 21 turnovers NLEX committed in the game that they lost by just a point, 83-82.
“I think our guards now have been given the chance and opportunity dahil isang taon na wala si Kevin. Si Kiefer halos eight months na rin yata. That’s enough time to step up. I’m actually disappointed that they haven’t stepped up. Nagiistep up naman sila. May mga magaganda sang laro. But what we need there is more consistency. If we cannot find that consistency with the guys within our team, maybe we should look somewhere else,” said Guiao.
Guiao and his coaching staff emerged from the locker room more than one hour after their game against Phoenix Pulse ended, admitting that they are weighing in on their options in the guard positions.
“Hindi pa namin alam kung ano. ‘Yun na nga ‘yung pinaguusapan namin just now that solid na kami sa front line. Kailangan lang namin ng habang wala pa si Kevin at si Kiefer ng maayos na guardiya para meron kaming decent performance habang hinihintay sila.”
Guiao said free agency is not an option so far.
“Tinitignan namin ‘yung free agency, walang nagka-come up na pangalan na solid eh. Kumbaga kung makukuha mo, ka-level lang nang nandiyan na, why change. We have a one month break. Tignan natin kung sino ang puwedeng available in the meantime,” said Guiao.
