KEVIN Alas is off to a strong start in the PBA Philippine Cup, and NLEX coach Yeng Guiao is very pleased.
Alas, lauded by Guiao for his toughness in regaining top form, is putting up strong numbers in the bubble after recovering from his second ACL injury last year.
The NLEX guard had a double-double on Thursday, finishing with 16 points, 10 rebounds, and six assists to lead the Road Warriors to a 102-88 victory over NorthPort.
“That just goes to show ‘yung mental toughness. More than the physical toughness of Kevin trying to get back to where he was, that’s really more than the physical barrier. It’s the emotional barrier na na-overcome niya,” said Guiao.
“Imagine having two ACL [injuries] in a very short time, you’d feel that your career is over. But for Kevin, it’s just starting,” said Guiao.
Prior to the match against the Batang Pier, Alas was averaging 15.7 points, 6.7 rebounds, and 4.0 assists. On Thursday, Alas also scored eight points as he teamed up with Kiefer Ravena to help in NLEX’s pull away en route to the victory.
“He puts in the sacrifice and hardwork, and slowly, he is reaping the fruits of his effort. It’s a testimony to not only his physical toughness, discipline, and hardwork. It’s really the mental aspect of it. That’s how tough he is mentally,” he added.
