Guiao: 'Alam ko naman may quotient, pero that's more than enough quotient for them'

Yeng Guiao: 'The way we played, we probably deserved to be disrespected' Marlo Cueto

NLEX coach Yeng Guiao felt Chris Newsome disrespected his team with his garbage-time shot in Meralco’s 106-90 win over the Road Warriors in the PBA Commissioner’s Cup on Friday night.

Newsome hit a ring-wing jumper for quotient purposes with 1.6 seconds left that didn’t sit well with Guiao, who shouted words at the Bolts guard that aren’t fit to see print.

Meralco coach Norman Black was quick to leap to Newsome's defense, saying his player didn't mean any disrespect and was only out to prop up the team's quotient in the event of a tiebreak.

Guiao is having none of it.

“You know, it's still disrespect pero sa akin naman it was totally unnecessary at that point,” Guiao said with a hoarse voice. “Alam ko naman may quotient, pero that's more than enough quotient for them.”

“At the same time, I did not expect it from Newsome,” the fiery mentor added. “I knew he was kind of a good guy who’s going to probably understand a situation like that.”

Still, with the Road Warriors’ lackluster performance, Guiao feels they had it coming.

“Pero the way we played, we probably deserved to be disrespected,” Guiao said. “Sama ng laro namin. We couldn't get any rhythm or find our offense.”

“We've been struggling so far, but it's very early,” he added as his team lost for the third straight game.

Still, Guiao sounded the alarm for NLEX.

“To be in a hole like 0-3, emergency situation na to kumbaga,” Guiao said. “If we don't pick it up in the next few games, I guess we will be looking forward to the next conference.”

“It's disappointing because we played so well in the last conference,” he added, referring to their semifinal breakthrough in the Philippine Cup. “We've been making progress steadily and then we come to this so it's not what we've expected, but we just have to go back and evaluate what we're doing wrong.”
