RAIN or Shine coach Yeng Guiao rued his team’s lack of defensive effort against Talk ‘N Text in Game Five of the PBA Commissioner’s Cup Finals on Friday night.

The Elasto Painters allowed the Tropang Texters to make 37 of their 76 shots for a solid 49 percent from the field on the way to a 103-94 win and a 3-2 lead in the best-of-seven championship series.

It was the second highest percentage the Painters let the Texters convert in the first five games. ROS allowed TNT to make 52 percent of its shots in Game Two, but the former still won the game, 116-108.

“We did not play any defense today,” Guiao said. I’m disappointed that we were always half a step slow, one full step behind, and there just was no aggressiveness on defense.”

“They’re a really good offensive team that every time you put your guard down on defense, they’re going to take advantage,” he added.

In the times when the fiery mentor did see a defensive effort from his wards, the Texters still managed to convert.

“They just shot the ball well,” Guiao said. “I thought that for certain occasions, we were making the effort, we were challenging their shots, but they were still making them.”

Everything seemed to fall ofr the Texters as Ranidel de Ocampo and Ivan Johnson combined for 54 points, while Best Player of the Conference Jayson Castro and Larry Fonacier added 15 and 12 markers, respectively.

“So when that happens, you cannot get down on yourself,” Guiao continued. “Kasi pag nangyari ‘yun, nafu-frustrate ka and then your energy level goes down and then it gets worse. I think it’s just being there mentally.”

“Even when they’re making shots, which are challenged, in the next play, you still have to keep challenging their shots. Ang nangyari kasi, if they make the hard shots, the next play we soften up and we’re not relentless and consistent with the kind of effort that we should put into this game.”

The Painters, though, outrebounded the Texters, 45-39.

“But it’s not enough that you beat them off the boards. You have to make the stops,” Guiao said. “I’m just hoping that we’ll bring our defensive energy into the game on Sunday.”
