YENG Guiao is set to take over as head coach of NLEX in the PBA after a long and successful run with Rain or Shine.
Sources confirmed to SPIN.ph on Wednesday that the colorful, multi-titled coach sealed the deal on a transfer to NLEX in a meeting with PLDT and Smart big boss Manny V. Pangilinan the night before.
The agreement with one of three MVP franchises in the pro league will mean the departure of Boyet Fernandez, who handled the team in its first two years in he league.
Guiao, sources added, formally said goodbye to Rain or Shine co-owners Terry Que and Raymond Yu before coming to terms with NLEX officials on a three-year deal.
"Nagpaalam ng maayos and the parting was very, very cordial," said a separate source from Rain or Shine.
Guiao's arrival should bode well for the Road Warriors, especially with the Pampanga-born coach having carved a reputation of turning marginal teams into championship contenders.
In his six-year run with Rain or Shine, the former UP Maroon won two championships and reached the finals six times with teams he veritably built from the ground up.
Before that, Guiao won a total of five championships with two other expansion franchises - two with RFM Swift and three with Red Bull.
