SAN Mig Coffee star James Yap left the court for good with still a couple of minutes left in Game One after hyperextending his right knee during a loose ball scuffle with Rain or Shine’s Gabe Norwood.
Surrounded by several Painters defenders, Yap lost possession on a drive inside the paint when he felt a sharp pain on his right knee, not bothering to go down on defense as he asked to be taken off the game.
“Natakot ako, kasi may naramdaman akong pain after namin mag-agawan ng bola ni Gabe," said Yap, who watched helplessly from the bench the rest of the way as the Painters completed a 91-83 victory.
"So nagpa-sub na agad ako kasi iniisip ko baka ACL (tear) ito,” he added.
The Escalante, Negros Occidental native said doctors will check on his right knee before the team’s Thursday morning practice at the Hoops Center in Mandaluyong City.
As it was, the game was already a struggle for the former league MVP, who finished with a quiet 11 points while going 3-for-11 against the defense of Ryan Arana, Ronnie Matias and fit-again nemesis Jireh Ibanes.
“Pero ganun talaga. Credit din natin ang depensa ng Rain or Shine. Ang kagandahan sa series na ito, makakabawi pa kami kasi mahaba pa,” Yap told Spin.ph.
