KIRK Collier’s familiarity with Chris Koon paved the way for the Magnolia rookie’s first ever stint with Gilas Pilipinas.
As one of the Hotshots’ deputies, Collier was convinced Koon can make an impact for the national men’s 3x3 team set to compete in the FIBA 3x3 Asia Cup slated in Singapore next week.
“Coach Kirk invited me to the pool and coach Ryan (Gregorio), too, and just talked to me about it,” said Koon.

“It’s kind of a shock. I didn’t realize it’s an opportunity that I can have, but now it is. I’m just really blessed, just having that Philippines on the chest is always a dream of mine.”
The 24-year-old rookie was named as part of the 3x3 quartet formed by Collier together with Jerrick Ahanmisi of Terrafirma, Barangay Ginebra’s Ralph Cu, and college player Sean Alter of University of the Philippines.
The team will leave for Singapore this week and play in the qualifying draw against Maldives and Thailand for a spot in the group stage.
Koon is thrilled to play in his first ever stint with the national team.
“I’m excited to play for the country,” said the Fil-Am wingman, who had a previous experience playing the half-court game for Ateneo during the post-pandemic.
The team has been practicing under Collier – who previously coached Barangay Ginebra in the defunct PBA 3x3 – for almost two months now.
“We’re trying to get involved with Jerrick, Ralph, and Sean. It feels good. Hopefully, the chemistry shows on the court,” he said.
The Ateneo product couldn’t hide his excitement when the team was showed the jerseys they will be using for the tournament next week.
“Me and Jerrick were like ‘man, this is crazy.’ So it’s such a blessing. I’m just grateful, and hopefully, we’ll make the Philippines proud.”
Koon finished with six points, nine rebounds, and six assists as Magnolia finally broke through the win column of the PBA Commissioner’s Cup at the expense of guest team Macau Black Knights, 121-109, Saturday at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.
