ONE reader, Joel Dagsil, sent us a message in one of our social media platforms with one question: 'Sir, do you have an update about the condition of Chriz Lutz? How is he now? Is he ready to play this all-Filipino conference?'

    Yeah, whatever happened to Lutz?

Intrigued, we asked Meralco coach Norman Black, whose team acquired Lutz last January after the 6-foot-3 Fil-American forward was relegated to the unrestricted free agent list by San Miguel Beer.

The Bolts, who assumed the one year remaining in Lutz's contract with San Miguel, had initially targeted a May return for Lutz then moved the target to the Governors Cup when it became apparent the injury-plagued free agent won't be ready for the Commissioner's Cup.

But down to the end of the season, on until Game Six of the Governors Cup Finals which Meralco lost to Ginebra to be exact, no Lutz showed up for Meralco.

      So what happened?

Black explained that Lutz has not fully recovered from the injuries that limited him to just 34 games with the Beermen in the 2015-16 PBA season. He last played for the team in that season's Commissioner's Cup before he was relegated to the unrestricted free agent list.

"He still hasn't recovered from his injury," Black told

Initially, Black said Lutz was dealing with foot and ankle issues which aggravated the back injury that hounded him at the tailend of his time with the Beermen. Lutz showed up at the Bolts' practice in April optimistic of a return, but a comeback never pushed through.

Still, Black said Meralco still keeps in touch with the No. 3 pick of the 2011 PBA draft and - from the way he sounded - has certainly not given up on him, even if Lutz is 32 and hasn't played a single game in the PBA in close to two years.

"We are in contract with (Lutz) just so we can stay updated (on his recovery)," the grand slam coach said. "We are still hoping he can recover and return to playing form again."

Lutz is no doubt a top-notch player when healthy. Here's hoping he can make a comeback soon.
