FROM word coming out of the Talk 'N Text and KIA camps, it is becoming apparent the flagship franchise of the MVP group is bent on investing in the future.
Set to get an upgrade from the coming PBA rookie draft where they already own the top pick overall, the Tropang Texters, sources said, are also looking to get a shot at the No. 1 selection overall in 2016 through a trade.
Sources said veteran Ranidel de Ocampo may become part of an earlier trade reported by Spin.ph where Talk 'N Text would get KIA's (now Mahendra Enforcers) first-round pick this year - at No. 2 overall - in a trade for Kevin Alas.
Under the original terms of the trade proposal, Talk 'N Text was supposed to get KIA's first-round pick this year for Alas, who, in turn, will be shipped by KIA to NLEX for Aldrech Ramos and possibly Jonas Villanueva.
However, that deal faces tweaking as Talk 'N Text may throw in de Ocampo in exchange for KIA's 2016 first-round pick. The Carnival will end up getting de Ocampo, Ramos and Raoul Soyud in exchange for its two first-round picks.
The proposed trade should become clearer when Manny V. Pangilinan gathers his basketball people to plot the direction of the three teams under their umbrella, in the wake of San Miguel's conquest of the PBA Governors Cup.
As it was, only Talk 'N Text's title run in the Commissioner's Cup averted a second consecutive grand slam for the rival SMC group, which completed a season treble in 2014 through Purefoods.
And judging from its moves, it is becoming clear the MVP camp is looking to inject new blood in its teams.
If it succeeds in getting KIA's first-round draft pick on August 23, Talk 'N Text will have the chance to grab both Moala Tautuaa and Gilas cadets standout Troy Rosario with the top two selections.
KIA's first-round pick in the 2016 draft may be just as crucial for Talk 'N Text, considering Ateneo King Eagle Kiefer Ravena is set to head that draft class.
Ravena is playing out his final season with the Blue Eagles this season.
