THE future of former Gilas Pilipinas forward William Navarro hangs in the balance as his camp prepares a formal appeal on a three-year ban handed down by the PBA following his decision to sign with another ballclub overseas.

Speaking to SPIN.ph, International player agent PJ Pilares revealed their plan to seek an audience with PBA commissioner Willie Marcial and the Board of Governors to plead for leniency and a major downgrade of the penalty.

“We are holding onto the hope that the league will listen to us with an open mind,” Pilares sair. “In a basketball player’s life, three years spans the absolute peak of an athlete's career, and wiping that away leaves a devastating impact.”

Pilares believes Navarro, acquired by Magnolia in the trade that sent Calvin Abueva and two other players to NorthPort, acted well within his rights and broke no existing league rules at the time of his signing a contract with Busan KCC Egis last August 5.

However, the timing trapped him directly under the shadow of a then newly implemented 36-month ban on rookie hopefuls and players who signed with teams in other leagues while having existing offers with their PBA teams.

Still, Pilares remains hopeful that the league's top executives will hear them out.

“The PBA has always prided itself on being a compassionate, a player-first league. The board members are fathers and leaders who understand the struggles of these athletes. They don't just protect franchises; they care about the human beings wearing the jerseys.

"I am deeply hoping they heed our heartfelt plea,” added the seasoned agent who has extensive pipelines across the Korean Basketball League (KBL) and Japan's B.League.

The league's aggressive policy shift was triggered in July after athletic wingman Jamie Malonzo declined an offer for a lucrative two-year extension with Barangay Ginebra to sign with Kyoto Hannaryz in the Japan B.League.

Pilares was sad to see Navarro get caught in the crossfire of the ensuing crackdown.

“It’s incredibly heartbreaking that Will’s career milestone coincided perfectly with the enforcement of this new rule. Wala na kaming magagawa pagdating doon,” Pilares said.

“But we are praying for grace. Will has always been a deeply dedicated, obedient soldier on the hardwood. He bled for the country and served Gilas Pilipinas with unyielding pride. Huwag naman sanang masamain o isipin na may masamang intensyon ang ginawa ng bata,” he added.

Pilares sees as an encouraging sign the recent trade that sent Navarro’s signing rights to the league's newest expansion franchise, the Titan Ultra Giant Risers, in exchange for the PBA rights of fellow KBL Asian import Arvin Tolentino.

Navarro played one season with Busan before the two parted ways at the end of the season, but the former Ateneo standout's PBA ban still has two years to run.

“This trade is exactly what William needs right now. It’s a breath of fresh air,” Pilares said enthusiastically. “We actively sought this change of scenery because the Titan Ultra roster has a glaring need for a versatile forward of his caliber.

“Unlike his previous stint with Magnolia, where his playing minutes were divided in a crowded rotation, Titan Ultra offers him the keys to the ignition. This is his best stage to show what he is truly capable of,” said the co-owner of the popular shoe store Titan.
