Will Jarencio-Teng reunion happen in PBA? Here's new GlobalPort coach's response

New GlobalPort coach Pido Jarencio says his former star at UST, Jeric Teng, is in good hands with Rain or Shine coach Yeng Guiao. Jerome Ascano

NOW that Pido Jarencio is officially coaching a team in the PBA, is a reunion with his former star player Jeric Teng far behind?

Teng is currently playing his rookie season for Rain or Shine, although he’s been known to have blossomed under the guidance of Jarencio after playing all five years of his college career with University of Santo Tomas (UST) which he steered to back-to-back runner-up finishes in 2012-13.

    They Said It!

“Kilala mo naman ang philosophy ko, kung masaya sa akin ang player, diyan lang siya. Kung hindi na, pwede naming pag-usapan yun." - Rain or Shine coach Yeng Guiao

Guiao made it clear to Spin.ph that he will not stand in the way if Teng wants to be reunited with his former college mentor, who on Sunday signed a two-year deal to be the new coach of the Batang Pier, replacing Richie Ticzon.

“Sa akin, walang problema 'yun. Na kay Jeric 'yun kung gusto niya magpalipat dun. Basta fair lang ang palitan,” Guiao said.

“Kilala mo naman ang philosophy ko, kung masaya sa akin ang player, diyan lang siya. Kung hindi na, pwede naming pag-usapan yun,” added the Pampanga solon.

Jarencio, however, was quick to rule out a team-up with Teng at GlobalPort  - for now.

Shortly after coming to terms with the Batang Pier to become the new head coach of the franchise, Jarencio said he believes Teng is in good hands playing for Guaio at Rain or Shine.

“Hindi, hindi ko siya kukunin at gagalawin 'dun. Maganda at maayos na ang lagay niya 'run kay coach Yeng,” said the former UST great.

“Naha-handle nga niya ng maayos si coach Yeng eh,” he added with a laugh.

Globalport actually had a chance to select Teng during last year’s rookie draft after trading for the Nos. 5 and 6 picks, together with its own pick at No. 7 in the first round.

But the Batang Pier used the three picks to get Terrence Romeo, RR Garcia, and Isaac Holstein, leaving Teng available as the 12th pick overall (second round) by the Elasto Painters.

Teng admitted he is happy playing for Rain or Shine, but at the same time, said he is open to jump ship to Globalport if the opportunity arises.

“Sa akin naman, okay ako kung malilipat ako dun (kay coach Pido). Pero happy naman ako with Rain or Shine, may kontrata pa ako dito,” Teng said.

“Happy ako with coach Yeng and my teammates, pero sabi ko nga, open naman tayo sa lahat. Bilog naman ang bola eh. Malay mo,” added the former US star.

But he did say it will be a different feeling playing GlobalPort in its first meeting with Rain or Shine in the coming Commissioner’s Cup as he is not used to seeing Jarencio being on the other side of the fence.

“Lahat halos ng teams na nilaruan ko kahit sa D-League, sa kanya (Jarencio) ako. Kaya maninibago talaga ako na makita siya sa bench ng kalaban,” said Teng.
