JUST two days after a heartbreaking loss to San Mig in the PBA Governors’ Cup Finals, Rain or Shine face the tough task of naming the players it will drop from its lineup for the PBA dispersal draft.
As usual, nobody in the team except for coach Yeng Guiao knows who will make it to the Elasto Painters' protected list and and who will be available to expansion teams Kia Motors and Blackwater Sports for the dispersal draft set on July 18.
Not even team co-owner Terry Que.
“Hindi ko alam eh. Si Coach Yeng ang may alam. Pero may meeting kami mamayang 12 nila coach kasama si (co-owner) Raymund (Yu),” said Que.
“Hinayaan namin kay coach lahat 'yan. Kasi siya naman nakakaalam kung ano maganda sa team,” said the amiable owner of the giant Que-Pe hardware chain in Metro Manila.
Rain or Shine, no doubt, has the deepest lineups in the league while Guiao uses the deepest rotation with a team built around Paul Lee, Beau Belga, Ryan Arana, Jeff Chan and Gabe Norwood.
The Asian Coatings franchise also has good mix of young and veteran players including young guns Chris Tiu, Alex Nuyles, Raymon Almazan, Jeric Teng and Jonathan Uyloan.
The veterans are Larry Rodriguez, TY Tang, Jervy Cruz, Jireh Ybanes and JR Quinahan.
The league's existing 10 teams have been given the option to protect from 10 to 13 players from the dispersal draft. But even if Rin or Shine opts for a 'protect 13' scheme, it will have to drop at least two players from a lineup that made it to the finals twice this season.
A source told Spin.ph that the choices for the names who will not make it to the protected list are Uyloan, Tang and Rodriguez.
The same source, however, as Rodriguez is one of Rain or Shine’s most reliable big men, Uyloan is coming off scintillating performance in the last Governors Cup Finals against San Mig while the veteran Tang is a known stabilizer and a business partner of the team owners.
“Kaya hindi ko alam. Maaring mabago pa yan. Ang hirap kasi talaga dahil gamit ni coach ang mga yan saka may sari-sariling roles ang mga yan sa team,” he said.
Team manager Boy Lapid was also equally at a loss when reached by Spin.ph.
“Hindi ko rin talaga alam kung paano namin gagalawin ang roster. Pero kung may kaunting maganda sa sitwasyon namin, sa next draft kasi may apat kami. Magaganda rin ang pwesto,” said Lapid referring to Rain or Shine’s 2nd, 9th, 15th and 22nd picks overall.
The Elastopainters have until 2 PM to decide on whom to drop to the dispersal draft, which will take place on July 18.
