THE hard-earned PBA Governors’ Cup trophy awarded to San Mig Coffee broke down during the height of the team’s celebration and the blame is being pinned on one of the players.
It is still unclear who broke the silverware, but a member of the San Mig Coffee staff said the cup serving as the crowning glory of the trophy was detached from its base right on the court, moments after it was presented to the team.
The mishap failed to dampen the spirits of the Mixers who took the PBA Governors' Cup crown with a thrilling 92-89 Game Five win over Rain or Shine, completing a rare grand slam and a fourth straight conference title in front of a packed crowd at the Smart-Araneta Coliseum.
One player who declined to be identified claimed that it was bench player Jerwin Gaco who was the culprit.
“Si Gaco. Nalaglag ‘yung trophy nung hawak niya,” the teammate said.
A San Mig official, however, had no one in mind as to who was responsible for the damage, adding he felt the trophy was too brittle.
“Lahat na sila kasi nagkakagulo na. Marupok ‘yung trophy,” he explained.
Regardless of who the culprit was, the team was assured by officials that the trophy will be repaired by the PBA.
