RAIN or Shine coach Yeng Guiao said he’s glad to have big man Beau Belga back in practice but is concerned the 6-foot-6 slotman now weighs heavier than usual after his two-month training stint with Gilas Pilipinas.
“I was a little surprised because Beau got bigger,” Guiao told Spin.ph, although he didn’t specify how much Belga weighs now or how much he actually gained since the last Commissioner's Cup.
The extra weight has left Guiao perplexed.
“Ewan ko kung masyado lang malakas kumain si Beau kasi I was expecting na since nage-ensayo sila (Gilas Pilipinas) twice-a-day, mas liliit siya,” said the fiery E-Painters coach.
Guiao said adding extra pounds would naturally slow down Belga, who for the last two seasons, has developed into one of Rain or Shine’s key big men with his rebounding, defense and outside shooting.
Nevertheless, Guiao said with still more than two weeks to go before the opening of the Governors Cup, he’ll make sure that Belga gets extra workout to shed off the added pounds he gained this summer.
“Mabuting maaga siya nakabalik sa team. At least, we could give him some extra work para makabalik siya sa dating playing weight niya,” he added.
Belga earlier said he was bent on getting in the best of shape for Gilas that he has scaled down his food intake since being named to be part of the national team training pool.
He failed to make the final cut for the Gilas Pilipinas’ 12-man roster for the Fiba-Asia men’s championships set to start on August 1 at the Mall of Asia Arena.
Still, the 26-year-old Belga joined Gilas' training in Lithuania last June and the six-game tune up matches of the national squad in New Zealand.
The Philippine Christian University product still practices with the national team after working out in the morning with Rain or Shine.
