THE immediate need for a warm body compelled Roger Pogoy to suit up and play as TnT Katropa resumed its PBA Governors Cup campaign on Friday at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.
Never mind if he hasn’t had a decent rest from playing continuous basketball the past six weeks.
“Sa totoo lang, pagod. Wala pa akong maayos na tulog,” said the rookie guard, who had to split time between playing for Gilas Pilipinas in the 39th Jones Cup and FIBA Asia Cup and the Katropa’s title bid in the season-ending tournament.
But with injuries hounding the team, Pogoy had to set aside rest for a moment and help the cause of the undermanned Katropa.
That’s exactly what he did in TnT’s 110-103 win over Phoenix that put the ballclub back on the winning track after getting whipped by Rain or Shine in its last outing.
Pogoy played extended minutes without the injured Kris Rosales and scored 13 points and four rebounds in the team’s second win in four outings.
The Gilas cadet though, struggled from the field on 4-of-10 shooting including 1-of-4 from three-point range.
That was in stark contrast to his last outing with the Katropa before he left with Gilas Pilipinas for the FIBA Asia Cup. He fired 16 of his 25 points in the fourth quarter of a thrilling 107-106 win over Alaska, where he finished with an amazing 7-of-8 shooting from three-point range.
“Masaya na nakatulong ako sa team dahil galing kami sa talo,” he said.
Unlike the other members of Gilas who had to take a few days’ rest upon returning from Beirut, Lebanon, the Cebuano guard said he had to join TnT in practice right away since there are a lot of players who are on the injury list.
“Nag-practice ako agad kasi maraming injured sa amin. Kulang-kulang kasi kasi kami,” he added.
But he’s not complaining.
Pogoy said he’s more than willing to play if it would be for the benefit of TnT. The rest can wait.
“Ok lang, pahinga-pahinga lang ng kaunti,” he said . “As long na makakalaro ako, tutulungan natin yung TnT na mabigyan ng magandang standings.”
