EUGENE Phelps sported a designer Gucci headband in his PBA Governors' Cup debut and he certainly money for Phoenix on Wednesday night.
With a $540 worth of accessory on his forehead, Phelps showed that he’s more than just ‘swagger’ as he towed the Phoenix Fuel Masters to a 113-107 win in the PBA Governors Cup.
Phelps finished with 50 points to go along 16 rebounds, and eight blocks, and with a performance like that – he certainly can wear anything he wants.
“That's my drip, drip means swag. So my drip is hella high right now. I saw it, I bought it,” said Phelps. “The Gucci band helped me out so yeah."
Aside from his head-turning headband, Phelps also garnered attention with the way he shot his free throws.
The 6-foot-5 forward shot most of his free throws with one hand before reverting to the traditional way of shooting late in the game.
He explained that it was his way of trying to fix his free-throw woes from last conference, though it certainly didn’t work as he made just 10-of-22 from the line.
“Last conference I wasn't shooting too good at the free-throw line so I switched it up. In practice it was going pretty good and in preseason games it was falling but this game it wasn't so I'll probably switch it back to two hands.”
Free-throw woes and designer headbands aside, Phelps believes that they have a team that can go all the way this time, especially with Calvin Abueva’s insertion to the squad.
It’s all about putting things together right now.
“Calvin helped us out a whole lot. He just brings that energy. This was a whole team effort. Just a good team, hopefully we build on that,” Phelps said. “We just gotta play our game. I feel like we can probably go to the semis, maybe even the Finals. We'll see how it goes.”
