JAMES Yap said San Mig Coffee's locals pinned too much hope on Denzel Bowles they forgot to do their job.
The return of last year's best import was supposed to reinvigorate the Mixers after a 0-2 start to the PBA Commissioner's Cup, but his debut was far from ideal as the defending champions were dealt a 65-93 beating by nemesis Rain or Shine on Friday night.
As far as he is concerned, Yap said the Mixers became too reliant on Bowles and totally forgot a word of advice from coach Tim Cone shortly after Bowles arrived to take the place of the ineffective Matt Rogers.
“Nung dumating si Denzel, na-point out nga sa amin ni coach (Tim Cone) na di dapat namin iisipin na savior siya ng team,” Yap told Spin.ph after the game. "Kailangan gawin namin yung part namin sa team."
Yap himself was a culprit as he finished with just 13 points and took just eight attempts in 26 minutes.
San Mig will have very little time to recover and regain its bearings after the letdown as it faces Talk 'N Text on Sunday, but Yap said he plans to talk to the two other veterans in the team, forward Marc Pingris and PJ Simon, in practice on Saturday to thresh things out.
“Kailangan namin gawin yung part namin at maging magandang example sa mga teammates namin para sumunod sila,” added Yap, who admits playing through a hip injury this conference.
Meanwhile, Pingris took responsibility for the loss, saying he himself failed to play with a sense of urgency.
“Di naman kasi porke nandiyan siya (Bowles) eh mananalo na kami. Magsisimula talaga iyan sa amin para matulungan namin siya,” explained Pingris, who finished with just two points and four rebounds in 19 minutes.
Bowles finished with just 12 points, 14 rebounds and a game-high eight turnovers.
