    COLUMN: We list 45 interesting PBA trivia you probably aren't aware of

    1 - Of the more than a thousand Filipinos who turned pro and saw action in the league, there was only one player which had a surname starting with the letter ‘Z’ — current San Miguel Beerman Paul Zamar.

    2 - Most number times a team won the grand slam which Crispa accomplished in 1976 under Baby Dalupan and in 1984 under Tommy Manotoc.

    3 - Number of twins that have played in the league — Jing and Noli Aldanese, Joel and Noel Guzman, and Anthony and David Semerad.

    4 - All-time most number of All-Star Game MVP awards won by a player which Vergel Meneses did in 1995, 1998, 2000 and 2003.

    5 - Most number of Mythical First Team selections without having won the MVP which Jayson Castro has (13 of the total 17 players to win MVP never had that many Mythical First Team selections in their respective careers); also the all-time most number of Coach of the Year awards won by Chot Reyes.

    6 - Jersey number of the 1st player to reach 5,000 and 10,000 career points in the league — Crispa’s Fortunato “Atoy” Co.

    7 - Total number of players so far in league history which made at least 1,000 triples in their respective careers -- Allan Caidic, Ronnie Magsanoc, Al Solis, Jimmy Alapag, Dondon Hontiveros, James Yap, and LA Tenorio.

    8 - Number of people which have won the grand slam twice in the PBA — 6 as players (Crispa’s Atoy Co, Philip Cezar, Abet Guidaben, Bernie Fabiosa and Tito Varela), 1 as player and as an assistant coach (Johnny Abarrientos), 1 as head coach (Tim Cone); also, the number of active players who are at least 40 years old (Asi Taulava, Rafi Reavis, Reynel Hugnatan, Harvey Carey, Mark Caguioa, PJ Simon, Cyrus Baguio, and Billy Mamaril).

    9 - number of three-point shots Rain or Shine’s James Yap (1,163) needs to dislodge Ronnie Magsanoc (1,171) from the No. 3 spot. Only Jimmy Alapag (1,250) and Allan Caidic (1,242) have more.

    10 - Total number of imports in league history which scored at least 4,000 points in a career. Barangay Ginebra’s Justin Brownlee is 149 points away from joining that elite group and first to do so in 27 years or since Sean Chambers did so with Alaska in 1993.

    11 - All-time most number of shotblocks in a game by a local player which Purefoods’ Jerry Codiñera recorded as a sophomore on October 3, 1989 in a 126-94 rout of San Miguel Beer. The record is almost 31 years old now.

    12 - All-time fewest points scored by a team in a half which Mobiline recorded in Urdaneta, Pangasinan on May 23, 1998 in an 62-85 loss to Alaska.

    13 - The total number of triple overtime games in PBA history, the most recent of which was that knockout quarterfinal in the Governors Cup on November 27 last year between NorthPort and NLEX which the Batang Pier won 126-123.

    14 - NLEX’s Asi Taulava needs to haul down these many offensive rebounds to move up to No. 3 overall in the all-time list past Ramon Fernandez (2,217). Only Jerry Codiñera (2,411) and Abet Guidaben (2,373) have more.

    15 - Number of players which have won the Best Player of the Conference award at least twice with June Mar Fajardo having the most with eight.

    16 - James Yap has played in all 16 All-Star Games since entering the PBA in 2004 and all as a starter; most common surname for an All-Star is Cruz with 16 players — 9 as Cruz and 7 as dela Cruz.

    17 - Record number of All-Star Game appearances which Asi Taulava holds; jersey number of the shortest player ever to score at least 30 points in a PBA game — 5-6 3/4 Anjo Caram of Meralco, who did it on November 10 , 2019 in a 103-89 win over NorthPort in a Governors Cup elims game in Antipolo City.

    18 - Number of teams that won at least 1 championship among the 32 franchises and at least eight guest teams in PBA history.

    19 - Number of wins Magnolia needs to become only the 4th franchise in league history with at least 900 (after San Miguel Beer, Barangay Ginebra, and Alaska).

    20 - The number of years it took before another rookie in Columbian Dyip’s CJ Perez last year led all locals in scoring in a season, or since Tanduay’s Eric Menk did the same in 1999. Also, number of steals TNT’s Ryan Reyes needs to become only the 12th in league history with at least 700 in a career and only the 4th active player (after Chris Ross, LA Tenorio and Alex Cabagnot).

    21 - The all-time longest win streak in a season which Crispa recorded in 1983, the year it won a second grand slam (won last 12 games in All-Filipino 1st conference and first nine games in Reinforced 2nd conference).

    22 - Distance in feet of the PBA three-point line; age of the youngest active player in the PBA right now — Columbian Dyip’s incoming rookie JP Calvo.

    23 - All-time most number of free throws made without a miss by any player in a game which Tanduay import Rob Willliams recorded on Oct. 12, 1986 in a 114-109 win over Ginebra San Miguel.

    24 - Number of wins Alaska needs to become only the third franchise in PBA history with at least 1,000 behind San Miguel Beer (1,354) and Barangay Ginebra (1,022).

    25 - All-time record number of triple doubles which Ramon Fernandez recorded for Beer Hausen in 1984, when he was five assists shy of what would’ve been the only triple double average in a season in PBA history.

    26 - Total number of players which have won Most Valuable Player honors, most prominent of which is June Mar Fajardo who has 6.

    27 - Total number of second generation players to date, including Meralco’s rostered incoming rookie Aaron Black, who is one of four sons of former PBA imports and only the second local overall.

    28 - Number of three-point shots San Miguel Beer veteran forward Arwind Santos needs to sink to become, at 6-4, the tallest player in league history with at least 1,000 triples made, only the 8th overall to do it and third among active players (with James Yap and LA Tenorio).

    29 - The all-time most number of free throw attempts in a game by a local player which Asi Taulava recorded on June 27, 2003 in an 86-87 Talk ‘N Text loss to Alaska in Game 4 of the All-Filipino Cup semis (he made just 16 of those 29).

    30 - Since it was institutionalized in 1989 via the Veterans vs. Rookies-Sophomores All-Star Game, there had already been this many All-Star Games and/or All-Star Weeks (which began in 2004) in Cebu City.

    31 - All-time most number of rebounds in a game hauled down by a local player which June Mar Fajardo recorded on May 15 , 2019 in San Miguel Beer’s come-from-behind title-clinching 72-71 Game 7 decision over Magnolia for a fifth straight Philippine Cup championship.

    32 - Total number of franchises that have joined the PBA to date, only 12 of which are active.

    33 - Alaska’s JVee Casio needs to convert this many three-point shots to become the 29th player in PBA history with at least 600 and only the 12th among active players.

    34 - TNT veteran forward Harvey Carey needs this many of defensive rebounds to move up to No. 19 in the all-time list past Manny Victorino (2,867)

    35 - Total number of PBA Drafts held since 1985, when Shell’s Santiago “Sonny” Cabatu was made the first-ever No. 1 pick by Shell; number of points Magnolia’s Peter June Simon needs to score to become the 50th local player in league history with at least 7,000 in a career.

    36 - NLEX’s Larry Fonacier needs to sink this many three-point FGs to become only the 13th player in league history with at least 900 made and only the sixth active player to do after James Yap, LA Tenorio, Arwind Santos, Alex Cabagnot, and Marcio Lassiter.

    37 - Most points scored in a quarter by any player, local or import, which Allan Caidic recorded en route to his all-time locals record 79 points on Nov. 21, 1991 in a game where he also set an all-time record 17 triples during Tivoli Milk's victory over Ginebra San Miguel, 162-149.

    38 - Number of points TNT’s Jayson Castro needs to move past 1992 MVP Ato Agustin (7,979) and into No. 32 in the all-time scoring list.

    39 - Number of shots Barangay Ginebra’s Japeth Aguilar needs to swat to move past Billy Robinson (627) and into No. 11 overall in the all-time shotblocks list.

    40 - all-time biggest lead at halftime (58-18) by a team which Sta. Lucia recorded on Nov 14, 2007 against Coca-Cola in a game which the Realtors eventually won by a score of 97-63.

    41 - San Miguel Beer’s Chris Ross need this many steals to become only the 6th player in PBA history with at least 900 in a career, joining Bernie Fabiosa, Ramon Fernandez, Sonny Jaworski, Dindo Pumaren, and Johnny Abarrientos in the elite group.

    42 - TNT’s Jayson Castro needs to sink this many free throws to become only the 16th player in league history with at least 2,000 made and only the second active player after NLEX’s Asi Taulava.
