RAIN or Shine is looking to tap tried and tested Wayne Chism for another tour of duty with the franchise in the coming PBA Commissioner’s Cup.
Coach Yeng Guiao said Chism can once again be a major boost for the Elasto Painters, although there could be a hitch in the team’s plan to get his services as the 6-foot-8 import is still under contract with Altshuler Shaham Gilboa Galil in the Israeli basketball league.
Guiao said given Chism’s solid all-around performance with the Elasto Painters last season, he has no doubt that the former Tennessee standout can easily plug the hole in the middle for the team.
“Sakto sa amin si Wayne. Fit siya sa ginagawa namin kaya nga tinatiyaga naming hintayin siya (ng) one more week,” Guiao told Spin.ph shortly after the team resumed practice on Friday following a two-day break to give way to the New Year festivities.
Rain or Shine faces a win-or-go-home situation Sunday against Alaska as it needs to win Game Six of the PBA Philippine Cup semifinals to force a sudden death match.
Chism averages 10.2 points and leads Altshuler in rebounds (7.6 rpg.), blocks (1.5 bpg), and steals (1.2), numbers that easily drew a big smile from Guiao.
“Ang balita ko kasi, patapos na ang laro nila at ang sabi, di na aabot sa next round `yung team nila. Kaya, hopefully, within a week, magkabalita na kami sa kanya,” he said.
“Wayne’s our primary option, though kung di siya mabigyan ng release ng contract niya, we may have to find another import. Pero alam niya na siya ang gusto namin,” added Guiao.
Chism averaged solid numbers of 22.7 points, 13.3 rebounds, 3.0 blocks, 2.3 assists, and 1.3 steals last season, helping the Elasto Painters reach the semifinals of the Commissioner’s Cup where they were eventually swept by Talk ‘N Text, 3-0.
The native of Jackson, Tennesse actually played through an MCL sprain on his left knee in the series-clinching Game Three, scoring 31 points in a 99-91 losing effort.
