AFTER failing to make the PBA Philippine Cup Finals, Rain or Shine again hit a snag when it failed to sign up do-it-all big man Wayne Chism for its import in the Commissioner’s Cup.
Chism failed to get his release papers from his team, Altshuler Shaham Gilboa Galil, in the Israeli Basketball League, averting a second tour of duty for the Elasto Painters.
“Hindi namin siya (Chism) nakuha. Everything is okay except the release papers dahil di siya nabigyan ng release ng team niya,” said Rain or Shine board of governor Atty. Mamerto Mondragon after breaking the news to Spin.ph on Friday.
The 6-foot-8 Chism, who led the Elasto Painters to a semifinal finish in last season’s Commissioner’s Cup, was the original choice of coach Yeng Guiao to reinforce the team anew for the mid-season conference owing to his familiarity with the team’s system and the PBA brand of play.
For the moment, Guiao and his coaching staff has three other prospects, which, for the time being, Mondragon declined to name, pending negotiations.
“Sayang nga eh, pero wala na, eh. So ngayon, may three options kami pero di pa namin masasabi kung sino kasi nagne-negotiate pa,” added the amiable Rain or Shine executive.
Chism averaged 10.2 points and leads Altshuler in rebounds (7.6 rpg.), blocks (1.5 bpg), and steals (1.2) in the Israeli league.
Rain or Shine, which bowed to Alaska, 4-2, in the All-Filipino Cup semifinals, has taken a weeklong respite but is set to return to practice next Monday to prepare for the second conference.
