RAIN or Shine coach Yeng Guiao has decided to part ways with Rick Jackson and bring in original choice Wayne Chism in a bid to boost the Elasto Painters' title quest in the PBA Commissioner’s Cup.

The 6-8 Chism, who helped Rain or Shine reach the Commissioner’s Cup semifinals last season, arrived on Sunday night and had light practice with the team the following day at the Nega gym in San Juan.

Guiao admitted making the decision even before Rain or Shine’s 78-71 win over defending champion Purefoods Star on Saturday in a PBA road game in Dipolog City.

“We felt we needed to decide right away even without finishing the game (against Purefoods) because of the possibility of Wayne getting offers (from other teams in other countries,” Guiao told Spin.ph on Monday.

Guiao made it clear that he had nothing against Jackson, the left-handed big man out of Syracuse.

In fact, the fiery Rain or Shine mentor even praised their outgoing American reinforcement for his solid defensive effort on Purefoods Star’s 6-9 import Daniel Orton that enabled the Elasto Painters to overhaul a 14-point deficit.

"Rick Jackson is not a bad import considering that we’re 3-2 with him,” said Guiao. “But then, before Wayne left for the US last year, tinanong niya ako kung babalik pa siya, I told him, ‘Wayne, you’re coming back (next season).'

"Ang problema lang naman is di siya (Chism) ni-release ng team niya sa Israel kaya we had to look for another import. And when we finally got Rick Jackson days after, we were informed that Wayne already got his release papers.”

The former Tennessee center/forward is coming off a stint with the Altshuler Shaham Gilboa Galil in the Israeli Basketball League where he averaged 10.2 points, 7.6 rebounds, 1.5 blocks and 1.2 steals per contest.

The 27-year-old Chism, a contender for last season’s Best Import award, will have his baptism of fire this conference on Friday when Rain or Shine collides with Alaska.
