TALK ‘N Text veteran point guard Jimmy Alapag paid tribute to Alaska’s impressive run in the PBA Philippine Cup, which he said is amazing considering the Aces were coming off a ninth-place finish in last season’s Governors Cup.
“I’ve said all along that Alaska is a great, great, young team,” Alapag told Spin.ph after emerging from the Talk `N Text dugout still in an ecstatic mood after the Tropang Texters marched to the All-Filipino Finals for the third straight season with their 83-78 win over the Aces on Friday night.
"You think how it is built right now, they’ve got young talent – JV (Casio), Calvin (Abueva), Cyrus (Baguio) and championship experience from Dondon (Hontiveros), Gabby (Espinas) and Tony (Dela Cruz). They fought us tooth and nail," the former league MVP added.
Alapag admitted going up against the talented Casio was not easy considering the former Smart Gilas starting guard's big, fighting heart and quick hands.
The one-time PBA MVP believes this new-edition Aces has the capability to fulfill their championship potential a few seasons from now owing to the experience they’ve gained in the playoffs of the season-opening conference.
“I expect them to be in the running for championship in the finals for years to come. They are such a tough team,” he added.
Unfortunately for the Aces, Alapag, was in his element in the series-clinching Game Six at the Astrodome.
Alapag hit three big triples in the second half that injected life to Talk ‘N Text's game as Alaska made one final run at pushing the series to a sudden-death game.
“I’m confident with my range from three. And Ali (Peek) and Kelly (Williams) gave me some great screens so I found some space to knock a couple down,” said the speedy Talk ‘N Text playmaker.
