HEADING to its final game of the PBA Commissioner's Cup eliminations, Rain or Shine is in a unique position to choose which between Barangay Ginebra and Meralco it would face in the first round of the playoffs.
But don't tell that to Yeng Guiao.
“Hindi kami mamimili (ng kalaban), makakarma pa kami dun pag ginawa namin yun," said Guiao in an interview with Spin.ph while on his way to Manila for the Painters' game against Meralco at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.
"Madalas kasi kapag namili ka ng kalaban nagkakaroon pa ng kumplikasyon,” he added.
Guiao's assurance should be music to the ears of Ginebra and its fans, who surely dread the possibility of seeing their team meet a twice-to-beat Rain or Shine team in the quarterfinals.
A Rain or Shine victory over Meralco, on the other hand, will see the Kings meeting either Petron or San Mig Coffee in a best-of-three series, with the Painters and the Bolts squaring off in another quarterfinal match-up.
Guiao was quick to dispel the notion that Rain or Shine prefers to face Ginebra in the playoffs owing to the Kings' undermanned lineup, with Mark Caguioa and Billy Mamaril both nursing injuries.
“Ang mahalaga sa akin hindi yung kung sino ang makakalaban, ang importante ipanalo namin as much as possible ang lahat ng mga laban namin,” assured Guiao.
“Hindi ko na iniisip yung sitwasyon ng ibang team, ang iniisip ko lang yung sa amin lang. Ang sabi ko nga, nakaka-karma pa yung namimili ka ng kalaban.
“Whether Ginebra o Meralco ang kalaban, it doesn’t matter to us. Basta’t may momentum at twice to beat kami."
“Syempre, mas magiging masaya kami kung tatapos kaming 10-4 (win-loss). Saka wala naman kaming ibang direksyon sa team kungdi ang manalo ng manalo,” said Yu, who will personally watch the 5:15 p.m. game with his business partner and co-team owner Terry Que.
“Of course, we’ll be disappointed if we go home losers tonight,” Yu added.
