VON Pessumal is hardly worried that he’ll have a tough time cracking San Miguel Beer’s crowded wingman rotation that could delay his individual progress after a promising start to his career at GlobalPort.
Traded to the Beermen on Monday for Arnold Van Opstal, the rookie gunner joins a bunch of shooting guards led by Marcio Lassiter, Alex Cabagnot, and Ronald Tubid.
Pessumal had been continuing to show flashes of his potential in the Commissioner’s Cup where he averaged 5.7 points, spiked by 1.2 triples, and 2.5 boards in 16.2 minutes.
But don’t expect him to get the same amount of playing time for the Beermen – at least right away.
He’s not complaining, though.
“Not really (worried),” Pessumal said after Gilas practice on Monday. “My whole life I really prided my game on just winning. I don't really think or care about the individual stats or the accolades. Para sakin basta manalo yung team.
“Now sakto I'm coming to a winning team,” he added. “I just wanna help out. Whether I play one minute, I play two minutes, five minutes, ten, whatever. If I have to help out in practice and go hard in practice, okay lang sa akin basta manalo kami. So good situation for me.”
The 24-year-old Ateneo product is a two-time UAAP champion in 2011 and 2012 – his first two years in college where he also didn’t get plenty of playing time. He has also won gold medals with the national team in the Southeast Asian Basketball Association (Seaba) Cup in 2016 and in the Seaba Under-18 Championship in 2010.
Now, Pessumal gets to help the Beermen in their quest for a second grand slam in franchise history in the Governors’ Cup.
“Excited syempre cause I watch the team from afar; they're a really well-oiled machine,” Pessumal said. “They just play really good basketball and I'm excited to bring what I can to the team. I just want to show them that I'm willing to work hard every day, just be with them, learn from them and hopefully I can help them out in any way possible.”
Plus, he can also continue his individual progress under the guidance of Lassiter and Cabagnot after playing alongside Terrence Romeo and Stanley Pringle at the Batang Pier.
“I'm actually really thankful kasi when GlobalPort drafted me, I got to watch Stan and Terrence practice. I got to guard them in practice,” Pessumal said. “Now parang ano talaga eh, sakto for me. I get to watch Marcio and Alex play.
“Those two.. wing combination is probably the best in the league, right?” he added. “So just to watch them in practice and learn from their moves and maybe just pick their brain from time to time asking them questions, so I feel like I'll learn a lot and improve more.”
