DIGOS CITY - Barako Bull guard Jonas Villanueva posted a perfect routine both in the preliminaries and finals to win the Obstacle Challenge event for the fourth consecutive year in the PBA All-Star weekend here at the Davao del Sur Coliseum.
The 6-foot-1 Villanueva was timed 27.2 seconds in the eliminations, but improved on it when the stakes got high, logging in 26.3 seconds in the finals to beat Ginebra athletic rookie Chris Ellis and Pamboy Raymundo of Talk `N Text.
Ellis finished second with a time of 28.10, while Raymundo was third at 30.3.
“Siguro experience na rin dahil taon-taon ko na ito ginagawa,” Villanueva said, whose time of 26.3 seconds now ranks as the second fastest in the history of the side event behind the 25.8 seconds of Willie Miller registered during the 2008 All-Star edition in Bacolod City.
Villanueva admitted the presence of San Mig Coffee sophomore guard Mark Barroca, Ellis, and even Raymundo challenged him to do better this time around.
“Mabibilis din kasi sila eh,” noted Villanueva, referring to Barroca, who timed 36.7 seconds, Ellis, and Raymundo.
“Pero buti wala si Ronjay (Buenafe) dahil siya talaga nagpapakaba sa akin,” admitted Villanueva in referring to the Meralco Bolts shooting guard.
The former FEU standout said he was blessed at being able to win the event again and take home the P20,000 cash prize despite the fact that he hasn’t touched the ball for about a month since suffering an injury.
“Galing din kasi ako sa injury saka ngayon lang ako humawak uli ng bola,” he said.
