THE appeal of Rain or Shine for a redraw of the PBA draft lottery has immediately gained support from three other ballclubs, according to a Spin.ph source.
The three unnamed teams, the source said, expressed willingness to join the Elasto Painters officials in signing a petition addressed to the PBA board seeking a redraw of the proceedings that has created a huge online uproar among fans due to its lack of transparency.
Rain or Shine team governor Mert Mondragon confirmed and welcomed the support of the three teams, but insisted the franchise co-owned by Raymund Yu and Terry Que can fight the battle by itself.
“Meron ngang ganoon, pero we said, ‘Okay na. Kami na ang bahala. Kami na lang muna. Salamat sa inyo.' Okay na rin na kami na lang, kasi nakapag-usap naman na kami ng PBA,” said Mondragon, adding they plan to submit the letter to the PBA office before lunchtime on Friday.
The Rain or Shine camp, however, can expect the support of the three teams if the issue comes down to a vote in the board.
Rain or Shine coach Yeng Guiao, who bared the plan to seek the petition to reporters during the post-game press conference of their 89-87 Game-Two win over San Mig Coffee, gave Spin.ph a rundown of what to expect in the letter they will submit to Commissioner Chito Salud.
Among the matters the Asian Coatings franchise will clarify are the ‘unprofessional manner’ the draft lottery was conducted, the lack of representatives from Rain or Shine (which owns the first-round draft right of Meralco) to witness the draw, and the manner in which Commissioner Salud conducted the lottery.
“This is an issue now of the credibility and integrity not only of the lottery but also of the commissioner. Kailangan niya sigurong ipakita sa ating lahat na above suspicion and above reproach ang ating commissioner,” Guiao said.
“Dapat fair lahat, kung hindi magiging fair sa ganung paraan. Kung napakasimpleng lottery ay hindi ka naging credible, paano ka magiging credible sa pagpapatakbo ng isang napakalaking basketball league,” the outspoken mentor added.
