MAGNOLIA coach Chito Victolero rued the inability of his team to sustain its defense on San Miguel star June Mar Fajardo in Game Four of the 2019 PBA Philippine Cup Finals.
Victolero lamented that Fajardo simply had one too many touches in the game, leading to a 31-point, 14-rebound effort. He was near perfect from the field making 13 of 14 attempts while going 5-of-6 from the foul line.
“Medyo na-dominate ni June Mar ‘yung game,” Victolero said. “Mataas ‘yung percentage niya sa paint. That’s the story of the game. We need to do a good job next time on June Mar doon sa poste. I think almost 100 percent field goal siya.”
When told that Fajardo did miss one shot, Victolero responded with a hint of sarcasm: “Nag-mintis ng isa, buti. Suwerte kami.”
Victolero reminded his players that Magnolia can't win if Fajardo got all these touches and opportunities to score inside the paint.
“Mas binigyan nila ng maraming touches si June Mar. I think doon sila nag-focus sa opensa nila. ‘Yung aming depensa, hindi ganun ka-aggressive. We need to adjust. We need to be [more] aggressive than San Miguel next time,” said Victolero.
“Hindi kami puwedeng sumabay sa opensa ng San Miguel kasi alam naman namin ‘yun na it’s a matter of defensive mindset,” he added.
Still, Victolero said Magnolia still has a good chance to bounce back with the best-of-seven series tied at 2-all.
“Maganda lang dito, tied ‘yung series and ‘yung Friday game is a pivotal game," said Victolero. "We need to prepare hard for that."
