His output was just two points short of his total in Game One where TNT won in a blowout, 108-96.
“Hindi naman talaga namin maiistop si Mikey,” said Victolero, known as one of the best defensive coaches in the PBA. “Ma-limit lang namin. ‘Yun ang goal namin. Ma-limit ‘yung points niya, ‘yung nako-contribute niya sa Talk ‘N Text.”
“Once mag-init, tuloy tuloy na,” said Victolero.
Chito Victolero says Magnolia needs to focus on team defense as they try to slip past Mikey Williams and the No. 3 seeds Tropang Giga.
Williams is only playing his second game against Magnolia this season as he missed their match during the season opener last June 5.
The defensive responsibility against Williams has been given to Rome Dela Rosa and Adrian Wong, and Victolero said he is happy with how the two are defending the high-scoring guard.
But Victolero admitted the two could still do better.
“I would like to credit Rome and AD. They did a good job on defending Williams. But we have to be consistent. May mga span sa game na sobrang dere-derecho ‘yung points niya. It’s all about team effort and team defense,” said Victolero.
That’s stretch of points came in the fourth when Williams had 14 in that quarter including a three that cut down the Magnolia lead to 86-81 only for Mark Barroca to respond with a basket of his own.
While Victolero expects Williams to maintain that kind of performance, Victolero hopes that the other players would be contained.
“Number of shots niya, marami talaga eh. Hahanapin niya ‘yun. We just try to limit Mikey and limit the other guys. Hindi naman puwede na 20 plus si Mikey tapos 20 plus din si Castro, Pogoy, including Khobuntin,” said Victolero.
