YENG Guiao believes San Miguel did the right thing when it brought in a new import to turn things around in its PBA Commissioner's Cup campaign.
Speaking after the Beermen dealt his NLEX side a 109-105 loss on Friday night, Guiao said Chris McCullough seems to be a better fit to San Miguel's system than Charles Rhodes.
Unlike Rhodes who mostly gets his points in and around the paint, the former NBA player has wider range and can attack in a variety of ways.
"San Miguel made a good decision to replace their import with somebody who can space the floor and give June Mar Fajardo some more room to operate," said Guiao following the game at the Mall of Asia Arena.
McCullough, a first-round pick of Brooklyn Nets, immediately showed what he can do by exploding for 47 points including 6-of-12 from three-point range.
McCullough hit 23 points in the third quarter alone, a stretch which Guiao described as 'disastrous' for the Road Warriors.
For Guiao that was the game right there.
"The import scored 23 points, more than what we scored as a team (17 points). So we got outscored by one person in the third quarter," said the NLEX coach.
Guiao admitted the Road Warriors knew McCullough could shoot based on the film clips they've gotten about him.
But he was hoping the adjustment period would get to the import.
Unfortunately, it didn't.
"He actually shot poorly from three-point range in the first half. Nung second half lang pumutok talaga," noted Guiao.
"The third quarter really determined the result of the game."
The Road Warriors fell out of contention for a playoffs berth with their 2-8 record.
