EVER wondered why KG Canaleta is playing the best basketball of his career this season?
The 6-6 pride of Tarlac has been averaging 15.5 points, five rebounds, and one steal in the PBA Commissioner's Cup. So hot is Canaleta that he has registered 29, 26 and 37 points in the Express' last three games.
“Talagang nagsisikap lang po ako sa practice, extra time sa ensayo para mas mahasa yung shooting at yung ibang movement,” said Canaleta in an interview with Spin.ph.
But the question remains: Why is he playing so inspired lately?
The former University of the East Red Warrior said he wants another stint with Gilas Pilipinas after a cameo stint with the national team in tournaments in Dubai and Hong Kong during the last league break.
“Gusto ko rin po kasing makabalik sa Gilas Pilipinas,” Canaleta said. “Alam ko po medyo malabo na ako, kasi kumpleto na sila. Pero hindi pa rin po ako nawawalan ng pagasa.
“Hangga’t hindi po nagsisimula yung Fiba-Asia (tournament) sa August, alam ko may tsansa pa ako."
Gilas coach Chot Reyes currently holds once-a-week practices for the team, now down to a pool of 16 players after Talk 'N Text star Kelly Williams took a medical leave.
Given the chance, the high-flying Canaleta said he is willing to catch up on the training of Gilas, which has been converging for Monday-only practices over the last seven weeks.
The eight-year veteran and five-time slam-dunk champion said it was his exposure to international basketball with Gilas that prompted him to hone his outside shooting.
“Pang Gilas ano?” said Canaleta of his three-point shooting, which has improved so much he has now hit a total of 46 from beyond the arc this conference alone.
At the same time, the 31-year-old dribbler said he wants to help Air 21 perform better in the Commissioner’s cup.
“Syempre, gusto kong ipakita na kahit hindi ganoon ka superior yung lineup namin, kaya naming magpakita ng maganda. Kaya naming sumabay sa iba,” he said.
